    TIME ACTIVITY
    6:30am Wake up to birds singing and the sounds of jungle nature outside the window
    7:00am An invigorating X min walk up the hill to the yoga Shala gets the circulation going – a great kick start to the day
    7:30am Beginning the day in silence, we quietly settle down for our morning routine of breathing and cleansing exercises. We then move onto 30 minutes of meditation in our preferred style
    9:00am Our first yoga practice of the day is an energetic Vinyasa style class taught by our lead teacher
    10:30am Fully energized and awake, we head back down to our dorms for a shower before meeting at our favourite beachside restaurant for healthy organic lunch
    12:30pm Next class of the day is Anatomy, we get into groups to demonstrate different key poses to show which muscle groups are activated
    2:30pm Break time: we enjoy local fruits and a catch up with classmates
    3:00pm Our Asana Clinic is the last lesson of the day. We pair up for on-the-spot teaching and spend time talking through proper alignment, safe modifications and adjustments
    5:00pm We finish the day with a modified version of the Ashtanga Primary Series, which we are now able to self-lead. We practice in silence to help to bring internal awareness and focus
    6:00pm Class ends just as the sun is setting over the ocean and we take a moment to appreciate the beautiful view from our hilltop perch. We head down the hill for dinner – a feast of delicious local papaya salad, phad thai noodles and curry
    8:00pm Time for our daily assignment and Sanskrit homework before we head to bed. Ready for another day of yoga and learning ahead!

Prices range from more affordable local options, averaging around USD 3 a meal, to higher-end restaurants. Every Sunday, Chaloklum has an open Thai Market at the pier of the village, where you can enjoy various Thai food dishes, fruits and vegetables.

    Namaste. Apoorva here, I am brought up in a culturally rich spiritual family. hence, since my childhood I’ve been exposed to vedas, upanishads and Indian culture. At a very tender age we started conversing in Sanskrit, Learning and chanting mantras from the Vedas and the Upanishads at home. In my teenage I was exposed to Yoga from Prashanthi kuteeram, which is now globally known as Svyasa yoga university. Later on along with my family, We started a gurukulam (traditional Vedic school) for girls for free, the education system physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually empowers girls with ancient Indian wisdom. From, 2016 onwards with my exposure and experience in teaching, I’ve travelled to many countries spreading the beauty and knowledge of Indian Scriptures (Teaching shlokas, mantras, yoga philosophy and Bhagavadgita). We also conduct short term Yoga and cultural retreats (in Mysore) to connect people deeply into the riveting cultural and spiritual roots of India.     The Yoga Shala

    V Yoga Shala is located in Chaloklum, Koh Phangan on the ocean front, surrounded by nature, natural light and ocean breeze. Enjoy the green grass as you walk to the beach, the open air, the high ceilings, two large geometrical glass triangles allowing natural sunlight and moonlight inside. V Yoga Shala is a private, boutique studio, nestled in the quietest part of Koh Phangan. There is walking access on the beach to restaurants, coffee shops, pools and various activities like kitesurfing, sup-boarding, jet skies, diving, boat trips and hiking.


    You will practice with privacy with a view to the vast ocean, among coconut trees, beautiful plants and the sound of birds. A truly meditative space, where you will find tranquility in your personal practice.

    How to get there?

    To travel from Bangkok to Chaloklum in Koh Phangan, you’ll first need to fly to Koh Samui, which typically takes 1-2 hours. From there, head to a nearby pier like Big Buddha or Maenam to catch a ferry to Koh Phangan, a journey of approximately 20-50 minutes. Upon reaching Koh Phangan, local taxis or motorcycle rentals are available for the short trip (around 20min.) north to the peaceful village of Chaloklum.

    Is it safe to travel to Thailand and Koh Phangan?

    Millions of people from around the world travel to Thailand annually. Well-catered to tourists, Thailand is a very safe and easy place to travel to. English is widely spoken and most restaurants/facilities have English signs.

    As with most tourist destinations, be wary of thieves and protect yourself against petty crime by exercising caution when withdrawing cash from an ATM and making sure not to carry large sums of money on your person. It’s also recommended that you keep your money and valuables close to you to avoid being targeted by thieves on motorcycles.

    Koh Phangan, like all places in Thailand, is very safe and easy to get to. There are a number of travel options to the island, which you can view here.

    I am a first-time solo traveler, what should I be aware of in Thailand?

    There are many solo travelers visiting Thailand per year. Chances are you will meet like-minded people along the way and strike up interesting conversations. Nevertheless, the best advice is to practice common sense. Don’t venture alone into unsafe areas at night, keep your belongings safe, and correspond with someone you know back home so they know your whereabouts.

    It is recommended to have photocopies (print and digital versions) of your passport and travel visas. In the event of loss or theft this will make it easier for your country’s embassy to fast track a replacement.

    I am vegan/vegetarian, what can I eat in Thailand?

    You are in the perfect place! Thailand is very vegetarian-friendly due to its Buddhist traditions. You can find many vegetarian and vegan dishes in almost all local restaurants. Our favorites are green curry with tofu and vegetarian Pad Thai.

    Is food/accommodation expensive in Thailand?

    Food and accommodation are very affordable in Thailand, which make it a popular choice for yoga teacher trainees looking to spend more time in the country. Local dishes such as Pad Thai and curries start as low as USD2 – 3, and simple lodgings can start from USD 6 per night. For more details, see accommodation options here.

    Should I be worried about tropical diseases in Thailand?

    Malaria is not commonly found in major cities/tourist areas in Thailand. While there are some cases of dengue fever, it can be avoided by protecting yourself with mosquito repellent and wearing long-sleeved tops and trousers in the evenings.

    For vaccinations, please check with your local travel clinic before departure and use your own discretion.

    What about travel insurance?

    Travel insurance from a trusted company that covers theft, loss and medical is highly advised. Make sure to check that your package also covers sport related injuries. If you are travelling on, many insurance providers offer longer backpacker packages at cheaper rates.

    How much money should I bring?

    How much money you should bring depends on your spending habits. In general, most people can live basically in Thailand for under USD 10-15/day . However, expect to spend more if you intend on doing some shopping, massages, and indulging in food and drinks.

    How is the Internet connection on the island?

    Koh Phangan is well connected with reliable Wi-Fi in most hotels, hostels and cafes. Short stay sim cards are also cheap, and can be bought on arrival at most airports.

    I have heard many things (good & bad) about the full moon party on Koh Phangan, should I be concern how it would interfere my yoga training?

    Indeed the full moon party has its mixed reviews. Geographically, the full moon party is at a separate bay from the training location, and can only be accessed by boat. People who go to the party rarely come to Haad Tien unless they are there for a yoga retreat or detox program. Unless you actively seek out the party, most of the time the full moon party goes unnoticed to the yoga trainees.

    How do I best avoid food poisoning?

    The best way to protect against food poisoning is by drinking bottled or filtered water and steering clear of street food. Also avoid eating uncooked foods, like salad, as they are sometimes rinsed with tap water. Hand sanitizer will also be your best friend.

    Do I need a visa to enter Thailand?

    Visitors from many nations are entitled to a 30-day visa on arrival and there are a range of options for longer stays and multiple entries. Please check the Thai Immigration website for more detailed information.

    What should I make sure to bring with me?

    It is advised to pack light, breathable clothing suitable for hot weather. You will be practicing yoga six days a week, so make sure to bring enough comfortable options. But no need to over pack, the island has many quick service laundry-mats where you can get your clothes washed.

    As with any country with a tropical climate, Thailand has mosquitoes. Protect yourself with insect repellent, long-sleeved trousers and tops in the evenings and after-bite relief.

    The island has convenience stores and pharmacies that sell basic toiletries, sunscreen, insect repellent and over the counter medicines. But it is recommended to come prepared, especially if you have particular requirements.

      Useful items to bring are:
    • Charcoal pills / Imodium
    • Rehydration salts
    • High protection sun-screen
    • Poncho (for wet season, October to April)
    • Adaptor (Thailand uses 220V AC electricity and two-prong round or flat sockets)
    • Reef shoes

    Can my partner/family join me if he/she is not attending the course?

    Yes, friends, family and partners are welcome. There is plenty of accommodation on the island suitable for couples and larger groups. On course days, friends and/or family can enjoy the activities in the area or take short day trips to different neighboring islands.

    Buddhism is Thailand’s national religion and the country is enriched with spirituality. Surrounded by the natural wonders of mountains, jungle and ocean, its no surprise that Koh Phangan is a haven for meditation, yoga and alternative healing. Legend has it that Koh Phangan is a ‘Crystal Island’, formed on top of a foundation of rose quartz crystals, known for its healing powers.     Thailand is an affordable destination to travel, with a low cost of living making it a popular choice for those looking to enjoy their travels before or after their 200 Hour yoga teacher training in Thailand. The island of Koh Phangan is a designated ecotourism zone and has lots to explore from secluded coves, jungle trails, refreshing waterfalls and hilltop temples. Here are some of things you can do on your days off on Koh Phangan:

      Here are a just a few activities you can enjoy in your free time:
    • Ang Thong National Marine Park is the most spectacular island archipelago in Thailand. Just a short boat ride away, you can hike to spectacular viewpoints and explore caves along the way
    • Hike to the island’s highest peak Khao Rao to marvel at panoramic views. Pass by the infinity pool of Khao Ra waterfall to cool down post-hike
    • The expansive Than Sadet National Park makes up a third of the island where you can hike, visit waterfalls and beaches
    • Visit a number of traditional temples with spectacular views of unspoilt rainforests: Wat Koh Tahm, Wat Po and Guanyin Temple
    • Enjoy the sunset accompanied by people singing, playing drums and dancing at Zen beach

    Traveling in Thailand

    If time and budget allow, we recommend spending some time before or after your 200 Hour yoga teacher training in Thailand to explore the area. Thailand is well developed for travelers making it an easy destination to explore, with many cheap and easy trains, buses and low-cost flights. Additionally, many nationalities are able to enter visa-free for 30 days. Those who have time to explore further can continue the South East Asia trail to Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar.

    There is so much to see in Thailand outside of the popular beach resorts. The mountainous north has national parks and conservation areas with protected wildlife such as the Asian elephant, cultural cities are home to some of the world’s oldest temples and long coastlines are dotted with picturesque limestone islands.     Getting to Koh Phangan

    As there is no airport on Koh Phangan, you can reach the island by boat from either Koh Samui or Surat Thani.

    From Koh Samui

    The route from Koh Samui is the quickest and most direct way. Flights to Koh Samui are regular, with regular routes from Bangkok through Bangkok Airways and Thai Airways. From Koh Samui, travel to either of two ferry piers that have ferries to Koh Phangan. It’s recommended to book tickets in advance or get down to the pier early before your sitting. The two ferry options available are:

    1. Haad Rin Queen Ferry

    From Koh Samui airport, take a taxi to the Big Buddha Pier. The Haad Rin Queen Ferry from here takes you to Haad Rin Pier. View ferry times here.

    2. Tong Nai Pan Ferry

    Take a taxi to Koh Samui’s Mae Nam Pier. From there look for the Tong Nai Pan Ferry which stops off at Haad Tien Bay on the way. View the ferry schedule here.

    On arrival in Haad Rin, you can take either a taxi boat (10 minutes journey) or a tuk-tuk (truck taxi; 45 minutes journey) to Haad Tien Bay. Tuk Tuks will vary in price depending on the number of passengers but should generally cost 500 baht.

    From Surat Thani

    A cheaper alternative is to take the train from Bangkok to Surat Thani. However, be prepared for a long journey – around 8 to 12 hours depending on which train you catch. Tickets can be bought at the station or online at 12go.asia/en

    Take a shuttle bus from Surat Thani railway station to Don Sak ferry terminal – this route is included if you have purchased the train + ferry ticket.

    From Don Sak ferry terminal you can take a ferry to Haad Rin, Koh Phangan (around 2 to 3 hour journey).

    Useful Infromation

    WEATHER Thailand’s climate varies throughout the year. High season is between November and early April where the country enjoys cooler and drier weather. The weather becomes more hot and humid February to May before the rainy season hits the end of May lasting until October. In the south, the climate differs between the eastern and western coasts: the west coast is most favourable during the winter months, while the east coast enjoys mostly good weather year-round.
    CULTURE Thailand, known as the ‘Land of a Thousand Smiles’, has a friendly population who are very welcoming and hospitable to visitors. The local culture has a mix of Indian, Chinese and uniquely Thai traditions, with a large influence from Buddhism, which can be seen in many traditions and beliefs of the country. Local food, dance, music and celebrations play an important role in Thai life.
    ETIQUETTE

    While Thailand is a very hospitable and open country, there are some important social conventions to be aware of. It is a criminal offence to disrespect the royal family, so travellers should be mindful to treat objects depicting the king (like Baht notes) with respect.

    Many cultural sites, in particular temples and museums, won’t allow people inside if they are inappropriately dressed. Be sure to dress modestly covering shoulders and legs. Avoid touching anyone on the head and be careful where you point your feet (metaphorically considered the lowest part of the body).

    LANGUAGE The local language is Thai, however, English is widely spoken and understood.
    CURRENCY Currency in Thailand is Thai Baht.
